THE INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION
The Institute of Education which was established in October, 1989. Is the newest Institute of University. It is a present organised into three units. i. Educational Services ii General Administration iii Research and Publication
Operating within the well-defined goals and objectives of the Faculty of Technical and Science Education, the Institute was designed to serve the educational needs of in-service Teachers by fulfilling the following functions, among several others: i. Organising and running full – time and part-time certificate, diploma and degree programmes within the Institute.
ii. Organising and conducting other out-reach programmes, workshops, seminars and conventions in collaboration other bodies outside the Institute.
iii. Collaborating with National Teacher’s Institute (NTI) Kaduna, in the conduct of Grade II Teachers examination as specified In the new national policy on education.
iv. Promoting research activities and dissemination of findings promptly to institutions and advising on their applications in teaching-learning situations through publications; v. Assisting the State Ministry of Education in matters relating to the curricula examinations, training, retraining of teachers, supervision, award of teachers certificate and any other areas that might be deemed necessary.
The Institute is currently headed by an Acting Director, Dr. (Mrs) O.C. Tawari who is assisted by an Administrative Officer, a personal secretary and a Chief Typist. The Governing Board of the Institute when constituted, is expected to be responsible to senate for carrying into effect the objectives of the Institute runs the following full-time, part-time and sandwich programmes: i. M. Ed. Degree programmes in Science Education and Educational Management/Administration; ii. Postgraduate diploma in Education (PGDE) iii. Postgraduate diploma in Technical Education; iv. B. Sc (Ed.) degree programmes(Sandwich); v. Associateship Certificate in Education Programmes. The first intake of students commenced their programmes on August 6, 1990 and November 7, 1990, for the Sandwich and Full-time programmes respectively. A total of 67 students registered for the various full-time programmes and 440 for the sandwich
programmes. Lectures have reached an advanced stage for the full-Time postgraduate students to take their first semester examinations. Plans are underway to initiate:
i. Admission procedures for students intakes into the various full-time and sandwich Programmes.
ii. The conduct of seminars, workshops and conferences for teachers and principals in the State; iii. Publishing an institute Journal; iv. Conducting research activities and disseminating research findings to interested clients.
The Institute is, however, grossly handicapped by lack of office space, paucity of academic and administrative staff as well as inadequate equipment and faculties in the execution of its numerous tasks.
