INSTITUTE OF FOUNDATION STUDIES (IFS)
INSTITUTE OF FOUNDATION STUDIES
The Institute of Foundation Studies (IFS) was established in 1981 to provide foundation courses designed to broaden the outlook and educational background of students in all Faculties in the University. The Institute aims at translating the broad education philosophy of the students a thinking process that is capable of building the mind and body and creating in their behaviour, an awareness of their special environmental needs. The Institute also aims at instilling in students, basic moral standards, and appreciation of the socio-cultural norms of the society. At its inception, the administrative structure of the IFS comprised the Director, the subject co-ordinators, the Institute officer, Secretary, Two Typist and two Clerical Officers. In 1988, a Board of the Institute of Foundation Studies was inaugurated. Membership of the Board includes the Vice-Chancellor as Chairman, the Director of IFS, the University Librarian, representatives of Faculties, the academic staff of IFS and the Institute Officer as Secretary. The Institute has had ten Directors: Dr. O.P. Aki, Rev. S.A. Fefegha, Professor C.E. Fiscian, Professor A.I. Ahiauzu, DR. (Mrs.) G.K. Ngeri-Nwagha, Rev. (Dr.) U.E Umoren, Mr. S. Fiddo, Dr. A.O.I. Gabriel, Professor (Sr.) M.P. Eboh. The current Ag. Director is Dr. Chioma Opara. The following courses which are taught by IFS academic staff are mandatory for undergraduates in the University. English and Business Communication, Man and Society, Philosophy, African History, Government, History of Science and Technology, Introduction to Psychology, French, Literature. The Institute also runs a Masters programme in Social Work and Gender Studies as well as a post Graduate Diploma in Local Government Administration. There are currently fifteen academic staff in IFS.This number is very inadequate for the several courses offered by the institute an d for the large number of students taking them. Their arduous teaching responsibilities, not with standing, IFS seminar series which commenced in 1985 have constituted an auspicious forum for the exchange of scholarly ideas. These seminars have rubbed off on impressive staff participation in national and international conferences. It is not surprising then that IFS Produces a hand book as well as three reputable academic journals – Ogele, Journal of Niger Delta Studies and Journal of Gender Studies . It should be noted Journal of Gender Studies which is international in its perspectives has published submissions from Kenya , U.S.A. , Germany and Indonesia . The Institute was directed by the Vice-Chancellor to organize a Niger Delta People's Study Programme. This programme took off on a promising note with a brain-storming session that featured thought-provoking memoranda on various aspects of the Niger Delta. The cultural activities of the Institute in the main revolve around its musical group which was steered by a renowned musicologist, and Senior Research Fellow, Dr. Adam Fiberesima. The late Dr. Fiberesima with his group, in the 1980's successfully staged an opera, ibini Ukpabi , in the University and in many cities at the instance of various clubs and State Governments. The Institute has since 2004 engaged in periodic teleconferencing with the Women Studies Department/ Global Learning Centre, Wichita state University, Kansas, U.S.A. this has provided an academic forum for cultural discourse between the two institutions Dr. C.
