•  PREAMBLE (MISSION STATEMENT)

The Rivers Institute for Agricultural Research and Training (RIART) was established by the University to:

•  Conduct mainly adaptive research in agriculture

•  Train farm workers, farmers and intermediate agriculture and fisheries manpower

•  Assist and advise the state in implementing food production programmes.

RIART's mandate is to conduct research in all areas of Agriculture which includes Crop/Soil Science, Animal Science, Fisheries, Forestry and Wildlife Management, Food Science and Agriculture Economics. The institute's mandate also involves planning. Organization, implementation and co-ordination of all agriculture training programmes below the degree level.

•  RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

The following research and routine activities are carried out in RIART.

•  Screening of clones of cassava for tuber yield, quality and resistance to cassava mosaic disease. This is a joint project between the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and RIART.

•  Field work on the following experiments.

•  Effects of plant population density on the performance of the winged bean in the wet lowlands of southern Nigeria .

ii. Effect of maize-winged bean intercropping on a succeeding maize yield in a rain forest of southern Nigeria .

•  Management of improved fallow in the humid rainforest of Nigeria .

c. Collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture in its massive food production programme in planting cassava. This is in keeping with the mandate of RIART to assist the state in implementing food production programmes.

d. Aspect of the population biology of the fresh water shrimp, ( Macro brachium macrobrachion ). On –going projects.

e. Studies on the growth of catfish ( clarias gariepinus ) reared in raceways. On –going project.

f. Effect of mulch on the survival of juvenile snail (Archahatina sp) reared in wooden trays. On –going project.

g. Mass production of the palm beetle. On –going project.

h. Effect of supplementary feed additives on broilers. On-going research.

i. Influence of environment on the performance of laying birds. On-going research.
