The Department of Chemistry is one of the departments in the Faculty of Science at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology. It is able to provide basis for students to gain knowledge and understanding of the principles of the discipline and be able to acquire expertise in the application of such principles. The training is supplemented with courses in Physics, Mathematics, Biology and other Foundation studies such as History, Philosophy and computer Studies. To be admitted into the four year programme of the department, a prospective candidate should obtain in not more than two sittings at least five credits or better passes in WASC; GCE; or NECO Examinations in the following subjects: Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, English and any other science subject.

The programme is designated to:

•  Provide training in the theory and practice in all branches of chemistry.

•  Cultivate a curious and enquiring mind and hence stimulate creative thinking and research.

•  Develop an awareness of the resources in the environment and the crucial role of Chemistry in the task of national development.

•  Prepare students for professional input in such fields as:

•  Pharmaceutical industries.

•  Paint industries

•  Food and drink industries

•  Cosmetic industries etc.

Having gone through rigorous scientific training in chemistry, on successful completion, a graduate chemist therefore has relevance and opportunities in the following fields:

•  Industry:

Drugs, brewery, Iron and steel, mining, glass wares, plastics, dyes and paints, refineries, cosmetics, flour mills, water treatment, food and cannery.

•  Quality control and medicine:

Pathology labs, Biomedical research, Regulatory authorities e.g NAFDAC, Standard Organization of Nigeria etc.
