CENTRE FOR SPECIAL PROJECTS
The Centre for Special Projects grew out of a subsisting and on-going technical co-operation arrangement between the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation(UNESCO) and the then Rivers State College of Science and Technology (CST – the fore runner of this University). UNESCO was to assist the college develop in areas of Engineering Technology, Agricultural Education, Engineering Education and Technical Education. The centre was envisaged to evolve as a manufacture and maintenance: finance generation by companies owned by the centre; factory based projects; and data collection and processing.
The university law of 1980 which established the Centre for Special Projects accepted the above goals. As technological centre, the CSP acts as a link between the University and industry, in areas of research results and findings. In short, it is one of the meeting points of industry, and academics for the purpose of cross fertilisation of ideas and the translation of theory of theory into practice. The centre has been doing that. It has organised a Technology Awareness Campaign focused on three main targets namely: Private Industrial Sector, federal and State Governments, and Local Government, especially the industrial development units. Yearly, the Centre holds exhibitions have been attracting a lot of attention, especially as they are organised as part of the annual convocation ceremonies. The central object has been to disseminate scientific information and the sale of research findings from the faculties, institutes and centres. The efforts do not seem to be yielding expected results expected results especially from the Multinational Corporations and other industrial organisations, particularly those that have their research and Development outfits in the developed countries. However, efforts are being intensified to redirect the trend. Already, the response from the Nigerian industrial concerns is beginning to show some warmth.
