THE CHALLENGE OF DEVELOPMENT BY ADONYE OMUBO PEPPLE, NATIONAL PRESIDENT, RSUST ALUMNI ASSOCIATION ON OCCASION OF THE 13TH CONVOCATION CEREMONY OF RSUST, 10 MARCH 2001 On this occasion of the convocation ceremony of over 1,700 recipients of various degrees and certificates, I’ll like to congratulate the graduants for remaining faithful to the end of their chosen courses of discipline. The road to graduation was obviously rough, tedious and painstaking, and a book can certainly be written on each graduate’s experiences at school. But this is only the beginning of the struggles of life. Greater challenges await every proud holder of a certificate from Rivers State University of Science and Technology. Every year, the dream of the founding fathers of the institution manifest in the production of the institution of the much-needed man-power to take up the challenges of underdevelopment of our society. Our immediate deltaic environment poses the greatest developmental challenges to graduates of engineering and environmental sciences. With the presence of the multi-billion petro-dollar industry all around us, and its attended environmental problems, great prospects await every alumnus with inclination to creativity and sustainable scientific discoveries that can be applied towards the conquering of our environment. The need, therefore, for the success-minded alumnus to utilize the advantages of the present-age information technological breakthroughs and develop new and practical concepts of human resources development, institutional management, engineering and environmental development, engineering and environmental development become highly imperative. A great number of alumni of this University have excelled in many fields of business, politics, law management, science and technology; and as the premier University of Science and Technology in Nigeria, we have so much to show for the successes so far recorded. Some of our alumni are in government as Ministers, Senators and Members of House of Representatives, Governors, Local Government Chairmen and other governmental leadership positions. We are indeed proud of all alumni in these positions, and I am encouraging more alumni to establish themselves in even greater heights. I cannot fail to appreciate the Governor of Rivers State, Dr. Peter Odili, for his excellent contribution towards the management of the University. As a Governor that strives for excellence, I am calling on him to implement record-breaking policies that can be adjudged the best in this country in the area of educational management. Some of such policies should strive towards arresting the incessant industrial actions that disrupt the operations of international institutions like a University. I extend same appreciation and call to this counterpart and Co-Visitor to the University, Chief D.S.P. Alamnieyeseigha (Governor of Bayelsa State). Both Visitors should make efforts to harmonize the management structure of the University for positive results. I salute them very specially on behalf of the Alumni Association. Finally, I am using this medium to announce that the Alumni Association will be organizing a national reception for all Alumni in various positions of honor in Nigeria, the pioneer Vice Chancellor Prof. T.T. Isoun (now Federal Minister of Science and Technology), Mrs. Boma Jack (Former Senior Lecturer, now Federal Minister of Culture and Tourism) on Saturday, 28 April, 2001. An Educational Rehabilitation Fund for the University will be launched on that day. I am inviting all Alumni, International Organizations, governmental and non-governmental organizations, and all well meaning Nigerians who are desirous for a viable educational system in line with modern realities and challenges for our children to keep a date with the Alumni Association on that day. Nominations of Alumni to be honored are invited from the public.
